An Ode to the Groutfit

Groutfit (noun)

/grout-fit/

An all-grey outfit typically made of sweatsuit material and worn by athletes.

If I had to do the math, I would say I spent at least 65% of my college days in a Groutfit. While on campus, my classmates and peers really only saw me in different iterations of team-issued sweats, t-shirts, and hoodies. In reality, I was blessed to have a wardrobe full of other clothes that only got love on my off-days (and most off-days, I would still wear a Groutfit).

My college lacrosse days were spent running from lifts to class, then work, then to eat (if I had time), then practice, and then back home for a quick shower before one of who knows how many different extracurriculars... So the Groutfit was easy. The Groutfit was like my school uniform. It made it easy to decide what to wear each morning.

If it was warmer, layer with a t-shirt.

If it was cooler, add a vest and fuzzy sock.

If it was cold, throw on a coat and some Bean Boots.

I mean... Come on? How can you beat that versatility?

I know my fashionista sister and Grammy probably disapproved... Grey on grey? It has all the makings of a monochromatic "What-not-to-Wear" nightmare. If you ask me, the Groutfit checked the only two boxes I cared about at that time... comfort and convenience.

I think the allure of Groutfit is also worth mentioning. It's not an overly flattering look by any means; however, it offers a level of mystery - what would she look like in a dress? Or jeans? Or literally, anything that wasn't all grey? I would claim the allure was my main motivation for wearing so many Groutfits, but alas it was not... I was simply a tired student-athlete.

"But what about now?" you might be wondering.

"Do you wear outfits that aren't monochromatic?" you could ask.

"Sydney, how many Groutfits do you still own?" you might implore.
